Every Saturday from Spring through first frost, Silver City awakens to the sights, tastes and aromas of the Silver City Farmers' Market, featuring the fruits and vegetables of our farmers. The current growing season marks the 18th in which these local farmers bring their best to Silver City's shoppers.
Operating in the Grant County Administration Center parking lot, at
1400 Highway 180 East, the Farmers' Market is a convenient way to shop
for the freshest produce and to stock up on herbs, plants and more.
Nestled into 6th Street at the intersection with Bullard, alongside Big Ditch Park, the Farmers' Market is a convenient way to shop for the freshest produce and to stock up on herbs, plants and more.
Many of the stalls feature organically grown fruits and vegetables, and local farmers offer a wealth of information on their produce and on the secrets to growing the same in your own garden.
Variety and selection vary with the season: spring greens and plants start the season, with a glorious assortment of fruits and vegetables following throughout saummer. In recent years, the orchards of Grant County have produced wonderful crops of apples, plums and other fruits, right up until frost.
As a small, strongly supported community market, the SCFM has been
chosen to pilot several nutrition programs over the years. The Women,
Infant and Children (WIC) Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, which
allows low income women, infants and children at nutritional risk to
purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the market, was successfully
implemented 14 years ago. This year the SCFM has been selected to
participate in the EBT (electronic food stamp card) Food Stamp pilot
program, enabling the market to accept food stamps. The SCFM has also
been chosen to pilot the New Mexico Nutrition Enhancement Program,
which will broaden accessibility of fresh fruits and vegetables to more
residents, especially the elderly, nutritionally at risk.
All
Grant and Luna County growers, large and small, or interested
consumers, who are interested in attending the market for the season or
just a day, are encouraged to call Regina Vinson at 388-9441 or
956-3159.
